January 4th, 2009

So many of us settle into patterns, habits, and routines because it brings comfort in a chaotic world. From time to time we need to stop and evaluate why it is we do what we do. Otherwise we might just be going through the motions of life and find that it is all just one big act. Our church experience is similar. We can do the same things over and over so often, pretty soon we are just going through the motions. Habits lose their meaning, and church makes no lasting impact in life. We want to spend the month of January looking at the very first Church in the book of ACTS to observe their habits and practices that led to a powerful movement of the Holy Spirit and ask ourselves, is what we do as a church, Just an ACT?

42They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
(Acts 2:42-47)
